The most tense topic of discussion at the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping was the issue of Japan's remilitarization.
Modern.az reports that “Financial Times” newspaper published information citing sources.
According to the publication, Xi Jinping sharply criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaiti for the country's “rearmament” policy. It is reported that the Chinese leader behaved “emotionally and angrily” during his speech, which was unexpected for American officials. Because before the summit, the topic of Japan was almost not brought up in negotiations with the Chinese side.
According to the information, Trump linked Japan's increased defense spending to the threat from North Korea and stated that Tokyo was forced to take a tougher stance on security.
“Financial Times” notes that relations between Beijing and Tokyo have become even more strained after Sanae Takaiti said in November 2025 that a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan could pose an “existential threat” to Japan.
The publication adds that in its defense reports published in recent years, Japan assesses the threat from China as a more serious risk compared to North Korea.
