President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received bp chief executive officer Meg O’Neill on May 12.
Modern.az reports that the head of our state congratulated Meg O’Neill on her appointment as chief executive officer of bp and expressed his confidence that the successful cooperation between SOCAR-bp will continue under her leadership.
President Ilham Aliyev said that there is a unique partnership history between our country and bp for more than 30 years. The head of our state emphasized that the income obtained from all projects implemented during this period was mainly used for the socio-economic development of Azerbaijan.
The President of Azerbaijan said that the number of projects implemented between our country and bp is increasing, emphasized that this demonstrates that the cooperation is beneficial for both sides, and brought to attention that our partnership is of a strategic nature.
Thanking for the congratulations, Meg O’Neill said that she felt honored to be in Baku.
The chief executive officer of bp particularly emphasized the visionary leadership of national leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev regarding the use of oil and gas revenues for the development of the country.
Meg O’Neill touched upon the investment in Baku's development, including roads and infrastructure, in this regard.
The head of our state noted that in some cases, oil and gas revenues lead to social inequality. In the case of Azerbaijan, however, this has helped the country's progress. Recalling the signing of the "Contract of the Century" some time after the restoration of our independence, President Ilham Aliyev said that the situation in our country was difficult after the First Karabakh War, and emphasized that we suffered territorial losses and faced a humanitarian catastrophe. The President of Azerbaijan stated that at that time our budget was at zero level and the only way out of this situation was to attract major international companies to our country and convince them to invest. President Ilham Aliyev expressed his gratitude to bp for its trust in this regard.
During the conversation, bp's energy projects implemented in our country, including renewable energy projects, were noted, and the importance of the project implemented by the company in our liberated territories was touched upon.
At the meeting, the role of our country in ensuring Europe's energy security was noted, and the prospects of SOCAR-bp cooperation were discussed.
