The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned its citizens about the risks of possible detention and extradition to the US during their travels abroad.
Modern.az reports that Grigory Lukyantsev, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Multilateral Cooperation on Human Rights, spoke about this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, a number of states not only in the European Union but also in a wider geography have extradition obligations, and individuals traveling abroad should consider these risks.
The diplomat emphasized that the Russian Foreign Ministry does not determine which country citizens should or should not visit. The ministry can only recommend that individuals who believe they may face problems with US or European authorities avoid traveling to certain countries.
According to information released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, among the countries where the risk of detention of Russian citizens is high based on US requests are most of Europe, Latin American countries, as well as Australia, Canada, Armenia, Israel, Maldives, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Liberia, and Morocco.
The ministry noted that the list does not fully cover all countries with extradition agreements with the US.
