Soviet-era street names should be changed - DEPUTY

"It is expedient to reconsider the issue of changing the names of streets bearing Bolshevik names and replace them with names reflecting the history, prominent personalities and national values of Azerbaijan."

Modern.az reports that MP Vasif Gafarov said this at today's meeting of the Milli Majlis Regional Issues Committee.

The deputy stated that in many of our cities and settlements, including Baku and Baku settlements, there are still street names from the Soviet era that carry an ideological content alien to our values and do not conform to our national identity.

"I believe that this approach will contribute to both the restoration of our historical memory and the formation of future generations in a national spirit."

He also stated that in many regions of Azerbaijan, including Lerik region, which I represent, the names of many villages were incorrectly recorded in the state registers compiled in Russian in the last century:

"When recording the names of villages, one or more letter errors were made, as a result of which these names became meaningless in terms of toponymy. Since these registers were taken as the main source of reference during the period of independence, these errors were repeated. It would be good if this issue was also kept in mind, local bodies and municipalities would take the initiative to eliminate these errors and this issue would be resolved. In general, I believe that the process of nationalization of our toponyms, which have been exposed to foreign influences in the last two hundred years, should be systematic and continuous, and consistent and purposeful steps should be taken in this direction both in the regions and in the capital," the deputy concluded.
