The number of people aged 70 and above in Azerbaijan has increased significantly in the last 5 years. Although the number of people in this age group across the country has increased by more than 150,000, statistics by regions and cities reveal a different picture. Some regions rank first in terms of the number of elderly population, while in some regions this indicator is much lower.
Modern.az analyzed the data of the State Statistics Committee for 2022-2026.
According to official statistics, the number of people aged 70 and above in the country increased from 438,650 people in 2022 to 589,566 people in 2026. This means an increase of 150,916 people in five years.

According to statistics, the administrative territory with the largest population over 70 years old in the country is Baku city. The number of people in this age group in the capital reaches 170,803 people.
Among Baku districts, Nasimi district ranks first. Here, 23,948 people are 70 years old and above. Khatai district (23,396 people) is in second place, and Yasamal district (19,301 people) is in third place.
The following places are occupied by Sabunchu (18,050 people), Binagadi (17,892 people), Surakhani (14,708 people), Narimanov (13,629 people), Nizami (12,836 people), Khazar (11,700 people), Sabail (8,728 people), Garadagh (5,167 people) and Pirallahi district (1,448 people).
Outside the capital, the highest indicator was recorded in Sumgayit city. Here, 25,233 people are over 70 years old. The next places are occupied by Ganja city (22,958 people) and Absheron district (21,526 people).
The first ranks also include Lankaran district (12,735 people), Shamkir (11,739 people), Masalli (10,520 people), Khachmaz (9,944 people), Jalilabad (9,837 people), Tovuz (9,678 people) and Guba district (8,824 people).
According to the State Statistics Committee, the number of people aged 70 and above also shows different indicators in other districts and cities of the country. While in some regions the number of people in this age group exceeds 8,000, in some districts this indicator varies between 2,000 and 4,000 people.
Thus, 8,278 people over 70 years old live in Aghdam district, 8,183 people in Barda, 7,702 people in Sabirabad, and 7,499 people in Salyan. Among the districts in the top ranks are Gadabay (6,950 people), Yevlakh (6,780 people) and Nakhchivan city (6,726 people).
Further down the list, 6,188 people in Imishli district, 6,209 people in Goychay, 6,131 people in Agjabadi, 6,076 people in Gazakh, 5,906 people in Gusar, 5,797 people in Shamakhi, 5,618 people in Kurdamir, 5,615 people in Astara, 5,358 people in Neftchala, and 5,450 people in Goranboy are recorded as being over 70 years old.
There are also many districts with indicators below 5,000 people.
For example, the number of elderly people in Aghdash district is 5,197, in Ismayilli 5,106, in Shirvan 4,862, in Aghstafa 4,730, in Beylagan 4,715, in Saatli 4,667, in Sharur 4,618, and in Bilasuvar 4,504.
At the same time, 4,163 elderly people live in Jabrayil, 4,075 in Ujar, 4,047 in Tartar, 4,052 in Agsu, 3,844 in Babek, 3,838 in Lachin, 3,780 in Goygol, 3,528 in Kalbajar, 3,502 in Hajigabul, 3,471 in Ordubad, 3,466 in Lerik, and 3,391 in Samukh.
In the next part of the list, 3,118 people are recorded in Zardab, 2,998 in Shabran, 2,727 in Sadarak, 2,554 in Yardimli, 2,541 in Zangilan, 2,433 in Julfa, 2,039 in Siyazan, 2,024 in Gobustan, 2,014 in Gubadli, 1,787 in Kangarli, 1,740 in Shahbuz, 1,667 in Shusha, 1,664 in Dashkasan, 1,448 in Pirallahi, and 1,012 in Khizi.
The lowest indicators are observed in Khojaly (763 people), Naftalan (676 people), Khojavand (670 people), Aghdara (636 people) and Khankendi city (270 people).
