The Georgian government will establish a new higher education institution - the Diplomatic Academy.
Modern.az reports that Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced this at the Cabinet meeting held on May 8.
According to him, the existing faculties of state and private universities currently cannot fully provide future diplomats with the necessary knowledge and skills.
It was stated that the new academy is expected to start admitting students from the next academic year. The academy will operate on the model of military and police academies subordinate to the Ministries of Defense and Internal Affairs and will have the status of a departmental educational institution.
"Our goal is to train highly qualified personnel for diplomatic service. This is of great importance for further strengthening our country's foreign policy positions," Kobakhidze said.
Currently, the largest center for training Georgian diplomats is considered to be Tbilisi State University named after Ivane Javakhishvili. Georgia's current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili, as well as many of her predecessors, are graduates of that university.
The decision to establish the Diplomatic Academy coincided with the beginning of large-scale reforms in the higher education system in Georgia. The reforms also envisage increasing the state's role in forming the educational order.
It should be noted that the Diplomatic Academy has been operating in Azerbaijan since 2014.
