The text of the memorandum on the cessation of the war between the US and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran was signed by the presidents of Iran and the US a day early, on June 18, instead of June 19, as previously announced.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump signed the text of the memorandum digitally and remotely within a short period.
Considering Pakistan's mediating role in the diplomatic process that led to the Islamabad agreement, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will also sign the text of the memorandum.
Modern.az reports that Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bagayi announced this news on a television program on Thursday morning, saying:
“The text of the memorandum was signed in Persian and English.”
He touched upon the change in the signing method of the agreement from a face-to-face meeting in Switzerland to a virtual signing, adding:
“After consultations over the last 24 hours, we concluded that it is more appropriate for the memorandum to be signed by the presidents of the two countries without physical presence.”
According to Bagayi, one of the reasons for this decision is that the political cost of violating the agreement would be higher if it were signed directly by the leaders of the two countries.
Bagayi also commented on the next meeting planned in Switzerland:
“After the memorandum is signed, the next phase of negotiations will begin. The Switzerland meeting is still on the agenda, but the final decision will be announced after consultations with the mediators.”
According to officials from both sides, the implementation of the agreement and the start of the next phase of negotiations will continue under the supervision of mediators in the coming days.
