Azerbaijani girls studying at the world's number 1 university - DOSSIER

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the world's number 1 higher education institution according to the "QS World University Rankings 2026" ranking. This higher education institution is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The higher education institution is traditionally called an institute, but in fact, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a large university. Called the "center of computer technologies," the university is a world leader in science and technology, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The institute is also famous for management, economics, linguistics, political science, philosophy, etc. Many achievements of today's computer civilization have been made in this scientific research center.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has many famous alumni, 75 of whom have been awarded the Nobel Prize. One of the institute's renowned alumni is the Azerbaijani-born scientist, the founder of the theory of fuzzy logic in the field of artificial intelligence, the late Professor Lutfi Rahim oglu Alasgarzadeh (Lutfi Zadeh).

According to Modern.az, three Azerbaijani girls are currently studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We present their short dossiers:


Deniz Sattarli
was born in 2006 in Mahmudavar village, Masalli district. She started her primary education at Mahmudavar school.
In 2017, she was admitted to the Turkish Diyanet Foundation Baku Turkish High School.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, she achieved a maximum result by scoring 300 points in the 9th-grade graduation exam, becoming the first in the republic.

She was the winner of the Republican Subject Olympiads for two consecutive years. Thus, she first won a gold medal by taking 1st place in the Republican Chemistry Olympiad among 9th graders in 2021. Subsequently, in 2022, she was again awarded a gold medal in the Republican Chemistry Olympiad among 10th graders.

Deniz Sattarli was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world's best universities, in America in 2023. She is the first girl from our country to be admitted to this university.

Sevinj Mahmudova
was born in Sumgayit in 2006. She received her education there until the age of 12. From the 6th grade, she continued her education at the Turkish Diyanet Foundation Baku Turkish High School.
After being admitted to Baku Turkish High School, she moved to Baku with her family. She has one sister and one brother. Both of her parents are programmers and work in public service.

She has won numerous republican and international subject Olympiads.
Sevinj Mahmudova won 1 gold and 2 silver medals in the Republican Subject Olympiads, and bronze medals twice in the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) and once in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in mathematics.

She prepared for the Olympiads at the International Olympiad Preparation Center with the support of the Ministry of Science and Education.
Sevinj Mahmudova, who graduated from Baku Turkish High School in 2023, was admitted to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). After studying her first year there, Sevinj was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2024. She is currently continuing her higher education at the world's best university.

Seljan Suleymanli
was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2025. She is also a graduate of Baku Turkish High School.

Seljan Suleymanli achieved high results in several prestigious Olympiads during her school years. She won a bronze medal in the Republican Subject Olympiads in 2022, gold medals in 2023 and 2024, and a silver medal in 2025. In the Azerbaijani Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad, she won a bronze medal in 2023 and a gold medal ("first among the first") in 2024.

In addition, Seljan Suleymanli was awarded an encouraging prize at the Asian Physics Olympiad in 2025 and won a bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad, making history as the first Azerbaijani girl to win a medal in this competition.
